After 4 or 5 years in EO, I reached a point where I felt I’d gotten what I needed. I’d learned a lot, built some great connections, and thought maybe it was time to step away. I told myself I’d done my part, and maybe a break was what I needed.
But then something unexpected happened—Kevin Porter reached out and asked if I’d consider stepping into a leadership role.
I’ll be honest, I didn’t think I had what it took. Leadership at EO felt like something for other people. But the nudge was enough to get me thinking. Reflecting, that one conversation changed the trajectory of my EO journey.
I said yes.
First, I became an Accelerator coach. Then, I took on a co-chair role for membership on the board and this coming year, I am the Engagement Chair. Something clicked in me! These roles didn’t just keep me engaged—they challenged me. They pushed me to grow in ways I hadn’t expected, both professionally and personally.
Looking back, I’m so grateful I didn’t walk away.
What I’ve come to realise is that EO has layers. You can be a member, attend events and of course be in your forum and get a lot out of it—but when you step into leadership, you see a whole new side. You gain more perspective. You build deeper relationships. You grow in confidence.
And most importantly, you start giving back in a way that reminds you just how much you’ve received.
To anyone who’s thinking about leaving EO, I get it. I was there too. But don’t underestimate the value of leaning in rather than stepping out. Sometimes all it takes is someone to say, “Hey, have you thought about taking on a leadership role?”
If that’s you—consider this your nudge.
