From Breakdown to Breakthrough: Reclaiming My Life and Business

A business breakdown turned out to be the catalyst for one of the most profound transformations of my life—a journey of reclaiming control over my health, my time, and ultimately, my future.

Eighteen months ago, I faced one of the hardest moments of my career: a significant fallout with my business partner, who also happened to be my brother. The impact was far-reaching—not just financially, but personally. In the midst of that chaos, I felt isolated, unsure of where to turn.

But two key sources of strength guided me through this challenging time: my wife, who stood by me as my unwavering rock, and my EO Forum, a community that would become my lifeline.

When I first opened up to my forum about what I was going through, I was amazed to learn that many of the members had faced similar struggles. Some had even experienced situations strikingly close to my own. The sense of shared experience and understanding helped me feel less alone. It was a reminder that even in the most difficult moments, we don’t have to face things in isolation. I also appreciated that some members took the time to speak with my wife, offering support that helped both of us navigate the emotional roller coaster we were on together.

Today, my business is stronger than ever, financially stable and thriving. But the real transformation, the true blessing, has come on a more personal level. The lessons I learned during the crisis have had a lasting impact on my approach to life.

One of my favorite quotes by Earl Nightingale perfectly captures this journey: “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” While the changes I experienced weren’t something I planned for, they were the result of years of preparation, much of it influenced by the support and wisdom of my EO Forum members. What began as a crisis has now evolved into a period of growth that I could never have anticipated.

With all the challenges of my business breakdown (and even before), I neglected my health—carrying extra weight, drinking too much, and not taking care of myself. It wasn’t until a health scare from severe sun damage that I had a wake-up call. This prompted me to focus on improving my well-being. With support from my EO community, I made changes that transformed my health and life, using advice and tools from members to rebuild both personally and professionally.

The business is now thriving, yes, but it’s the transformation within me that truly stands out. I’ve taken control of my life—my health, my time, and the way I show up for the people I love. I’m healthier, fitter, and more present for my family. And now, I’m motivated to share my story, in the hope that it might inspire others who are facing similar challenges.

Here are some of the books that have been integral to my transformation:

  • 10X Is Easier Than 2X by Dan Sullivan
  • The Sober Diaries by Claire Pooley
  • The CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet by Peter Clifton and Manny Noakes

This journey has been one of both adversity and incredible growth, and I’m grateful for every step along the way.
